International Corner: Featuring School Library Guidelines

Scotland Vibrant Libraries

Canadian School Libraries (CSL) would like to draw attention to an updated section of main CSL website where you will find Canadian standards, guides and policies to support the advancement of school library learning commons across Canada. Visit the Program Guidelines page on the CSL website.

CSL has also started to curate international guides that will be helpful to professional learning.
We draw attention to a recently released document, Vibrant Libraries, Thriving Schools: A National Strategy for School Libraries in Scotland 2018 – 2023, published by the Scottish Library & Information Council (SLiC), Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA), The Scottish Government.

Scotland Vibrant LibrariesVibrant Libraries, Thriving Schools – A National Strategy for School Libraries in Scotland 2018-2023 is the strategic document for the future of school library services in Scotland’s education sector. The vision outlined in this document is one where every child and young person in Scotland has access to a vibrant school library service. It highlights best practice and how this is incorporated into provision from Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) settings to primary and secondary schools. The document also supports the continuous improvement and professional development of school library services and school librarians. (From the Executive Summary)

The Scottish Government endorses a dynamic vision for equity in school library services based on best practice to date aiming for five-year implementation, noting that implementation and provision will vary between local authorities due to local priorities and circumstance. The engaging document outlines recommended actions for the headmaster (principal) and school librarian and includes examples of best practice from schools around the vision’s five strategic aims: 1) Curriculum, Learner Journey and Developing the Young Workforce, 2) Information, Digital Literacy and Digital Creativity, 3) Literacy, Numeracy and Family Learning, 4) Health and Well-being, and 5) Leadership, Standards and Working Models.
